Welcome to Ludo — One of South Asia's Favourite Board Games

Ludo is a classic board game enjoyed by millions of families across Pakistan, India, and beyond. Simple to learn but surprisingly deep in strategy, it's the perfect game for players of all ages. If you're just starting out, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

What You Need to Play

  • A Ludo board (square board divided into 4 coloured zones)
  • 4 sets of 4 tokens (each player gets a colour: red, blue, green, or yellow)
  • One six-sided die
  • 2 to 4 players

The Goal of Ludo

Be the first player to move all four of your tokens from your starting area (home base), around the entire board, and into your coloured finishing column — the Home column — to complete the journey.

Basic Rules Step by Step

  1. To Enter the Board: You must roll a 6 to move a token from your home base onto the starting square.
  2. Rolling a 6: Any time you roll a 6, you get an extra turn. You can use it to enter a new token or advance an existing one.
  3. Moving Tokens: On each turn, roll the die and move one of your active tokens exactly that many squares clockwise around the board.
  4. Capturing Opponents: If you land on a square occupied by an opponent's token, their token is sent back to their home base — and you get a bonus roll!
  5. Safe Squares: Certain squares (usually marked with a star or cross) are safe zones where tokens cannot be captured.
  6. Entering Home: Once your token reaches your coloured home column, it can only move up that column. You must roll the exact number needed to move the token to the very last "Home" square.
  7. Winning: The first player to get all four tokens into Home wins.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Only focusing on one token: Spread your tokens out so you have more options on each roll.
  • Ignoring threats: Always check if any of your tokens are at risk of being captured before moving.
  • Rushing home too early: Getting one token home quickly is good, but leaving others stuck at the start is a disadvantage.
  • Not using safe squares: Position tokens on safe squares when possible, especially in the mid-game when opponents are close.

Smart Tips for New Players

Tip 1: Enter Multiple Tokens Early

Use every 6 you roll in the early game to bring new tokens onto the board. Having more tokens in play gives you flexibility — you'll almost always have a meaningful move available.

Tip 2: Keep Tokens Together for Protection

Two tokens on the same square form a block — opponents cannot pass or capture a blocked square. Use this defensively to slow down opponents who are near your pieces.

Tip 3: Prioritise Capturing When Possible

Sending an opponent's token back home not only sets them back but also grants you a free roll. When you have a choice, favour moves that result in a capture.

Tip 4: Don't Waste Big Rolls

If you roll a 5 or 6, use it on a token that benefits most — perhaps one that's nearly home, or one stuck behind an opponent's block.
